Solving Online Analyzer Time Delays

Many process design engineers may intermittently get involved in the design of online analyzers and associated sampling systems. This article provides proven and practical strategies to significantly reduce time delays of any online analyzer systems without additional or expensive investment. Time delay is a key element of online analyzer sampling loop design because in order to use the analyzer data to timely adjust process control, the analyzer data should reflect the most recent process conditions (or samples). Analyzer engineers are mainly good at specifying components in the analyzer systems based on their experiences with previous analyzer systems. However, due to their limited process engineering fundamental knowledge, the design of analyzer sampling loop is mostly copied as-is from previous design without understanding that a seemingly reasonable design may actually be causing significant time delays. In many cases, the time delay is not calculated and blindly assumed to be acceptable by process design engineers who design the main process system, causing unexpected problems in service.
